Oct 2026: A late spring freeze took a large part of the 2026 apple crop, so apple picking is limited and may not be open every day. Check the farm's site or social media for current picking before you go for apples.

About Tranquillity Farms
Tranquillity Farms is a third-generation, family-run farm on Route 517 in Green Township, about a mile north of the Allamuchy exit off Route 80. The Freeborn family has worked this land since 1950, and today the farm grows sweet corn, pumpkins, green beans and a long list of other vegetables, raises its own beef and pork, and runs a busy farm market.
The market is open year-round with fresh, local produce, much of it grown right here, plus bakery goods such as pies, donuts, cookies and bread; milk, butter, cheese and local eggs; the farm's own hormone and antibiotic free beef and pork; and honey, jams, pickles and other jarred goods. The ice cream window serves the farm's homemade ice cream every day of the year, and pints, quarts and ice cream cakes are sold inside. Spring brings flowers, hanging baskets and garden supplies, summer brings sweet corn, a cut flower field and sunflowers, and in winter the market sells pre-cut Christmas trees, wreaths and holiday decor.
Fall is the big season. Fall Fest weekends bring hayrides out to the pick-your-own pumpkin field, a corn maze, the cow train, a bounce pillow, pumpkin launchers, a giant hay slide, a sunflower field, farm animals, live music and food vendors, and the farm's own u-pick apple orchard opens while the apples last. Entry is free, and you buy tickets only for the activities you want. There is a playground and a covered pavilion for parties, and the farm hosts birthday parties, field trips and summer classes for kids.

A Brief History
The land was once owned by the Stuyvesant family, who used it to raise game and host hunts for guests such as Theodore Roosevelt, and who also kept a flock of prize-winning sheep and a small dairy herd. Much of the land on the south side of Route 517 was sold to the State of New Jersey in the 1970s and became part of Allamuchy Mountain State Park.
Larry Freeborn's father rented Tranquillity Farms from 1950. Larry started his own dairy business in 1989 with a few cows and a tractor on a rented farm in Newton, moved back to Tranquillity in 1998, and in 1999 bought the farm, after its development rights were sold to the state and the land was preserved. Since then the family has grown a produce stand, begun in 2000, into a bigger farm market at its current spot, added greenhouses, started a wholesale produce business supplying ShopRite stores around 2008, begun making its own ice cream and planted a new u-pick apple orchard. Larry's four children now work in the business.
Special / Seasonal Events
Every fall, Tranquillity Farms offers fun on the farm for all ages during its Fall Fest, on weekends from mid-September through October, plus Columbus Day. This Sussex County farm offers many fun fall activities. Hop on a hayride to the pumpkin field, where you can find the perfect Halloween pumpkin right off the vine. Enjoy the corn maze, the Kid's Fun Greenhouse, the cow train, the giant hay slide, the sunflower field, the playground area and the farm animals. Test your skills on the kid-friendly pumpkin launchers or jump to your heart's content on the bounce pillow. Weekends also bring live music, food vendors, the farm's own grilled corn, apple cider donuts and craft brewers.
For 2026, Fall Fest weekends run Saturdays and Sundays from September 19 through November 1, plus Columbus Day, Monday, October 12, from 10 AM to 5 PM. Fall Fest Fridays bring the whole weekend lineup to Friday afternoons in October, 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM, at weekday prices. On other weekdays from late September through October, a weekday package covers the hayride, pumpkin picking and the corn maze from noon to 5 PM.
Tips and Tricks
Activities get busier as the day goes on, so come early for shorter lines. If you buy tickets late in the day, do the hayride before the corn maze. Fall Fest Fridays are the way to get the full weekend lineup without the weekend crowds.
Admission & Guidelines
Entry to the farm is free, and so are the food vendors, live music, giant slide, kids' greenhouse, playground, flower fields and farm animals. Tickets are needed for the fall activities and are sold on site; buying online ahead is optional, costs a processing fee, and guarantees entry on peak weekends. The basic package includes both the hayride and the corn maze, and the hayride is the only way to reach the pumpkin field, so hayride-only tickets are sold only to seniors 65 and over. Children 2 and under ride the hayride and walk the corn maze free; the cow train is sold separately. Pumpkins are not included in the packages and cost $0.79 a pound for 2026.
For apples, buy a picking bag in the farm stand, or at the ticket booth on weekends, before entering the orchard: for 2026, $9 for a quarter peck, $16 for a half peck and $25 for a full peck. Apples must fit in the bag, and personal bags, carts and wagons are not allowed in the orchard. Cash and cards are accepted everywhere except the pumpkin launchers, with a 3% fee on credit cards and none on debit. Friendly, leashed dogs are welcome everywhere except the apple orchard; clean up after them, and make sure other riders are comfortable before bringing a dog on the hayride.
Hours / Season of Operation
The farm market is open year-round, Monday to Saturday from 8:30 AM to 7 PM and Sunday from 8:30 AM to 5 PM. The ice cream window is open every day, year-round, from 11 AM into the evening.
Fall Fest runs on weekends from mid-September through October, plus Columbus Day, from 10 AM to 5 PM. The last all-inclusive tickets are sold at 4 PM and the last hayride and corn maze tickets about half an hour before close. On Saturdays the farm stand and apple picking stay open until 7 PM after the activities end. Weekday pumpkin picking packages run from noon to 5 PM, and in October the Friday afternoon Fall Fest runs 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM. U-pick apples are open daily during market hours from September into October, until the orchard is picked out.
