A Brief History

The land that now constitutes Thompson Park has a rich history. Prior to European settlement, the area was inhabited by the Leni Lenape Indians who fished in Lake Manalapan. In 1746, Reverend David Brainerd established "Bethel," an Indian mission with a school and church, near or on the present-day park grounds. The initial land for the modern Thompson Park was acquired by Middlesex County in 1955-56, with subsequent additions expanding its size over the years. The park protects the 30-acre Manalapan Lake and Manalapan Brook.
