A Brief History

Fairfield Farms has been family owned and operated for almost 100 years. It began as a 35-acre tract devoted to growing vegetables, and 20 acres remain today. It is the only remaining farm tract in a town that once had more than a dozen farms, growing everything from horseradish and rhubarb to broccoli and cauliflower.

From 1975 to 1999 the farm ran a large produce market on the farm and took its produce to five more farmers' markets in and around northern New Jersey. In 1999 the market house and 12 greenhouses moved to another part of the farm, and for the next 10 years the focus shifted to flowers in spring and summer and agritourism in September and October. In 2010 the family opened a produce market at the Big Piece Road location, and it has been known for its sweet corn, Jersey tomatoes and peaches ever since.

Programs / Education

Fairfield Farms runs weekday school field trips for pre-kindergarten through second grade and for special needs groups, and Scouts and other groups can book after school hours. For 2026 the educational farm tour is $13 per student and $10 per adult, first come, first served. It takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes and includes a walk through the corn maze, a hayride around the farm, a stop at the pumpkin patch to pick out a small pumpkin, the slides at Big Bale Mountain, a tumble round and round on the Rock 'n Roller ride and an educational talk at the Animal Exhibit.

The farm also hosts corporate family outings and team-building events, and church groups are welcome on weekends in September and early October.

Fall Fun!

Fall is the best time on the farm! Fairfield Farms has a reputation for being a wonderful place to visit in the fall, a fun fall farm experience right in Essex County.

The fall season begins the third weekend of September with all attractions open, Jersey Fresh produce and a great supply of fall decorative items: mums, cornstalks, bales of straw, large gourds and pumpkins. Weekend hayrides for the public start at 10 AM. On weekdays the public hayrides run from 1 PM to 5:30 PM, and mornings are reserved for school field trips and group outings. The activities include hayrides, pumpkin picking, a 5 acre child-friendly corn maze, the rope maze, the Goat Family, Big Bale Mountain, the Rolling Tube Ride and the pumpkin slingshot.

Spooky Trail and Haunted Forest Hayride

The Spooky Trail is a daytime hayride on the woodland trails around the farm, through haunted woods where you meet the Bones family, some still with us, others not so fortunate. After dark, the Haunted Forest Hayride runs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening in September and October, leaving every 15 minutes from 6:30 PM, with the last ride at 8:45 PM. The farm advises parental discretion for children under 10 on both rides.

There is a large selection of snacks and fresh Jersey apples. Drinks include cider, soda and bottled water for the warmer days, with coffee and hot mulled cider on the cooler ones.

Admission & Guidelines

For 2026, the Spooky Trail daytime hayride is $5, sold at the farm, and is not included in general admission. The Haunted Forest Hayride is $15 for 2026, and tickets must be bought online in advance. The farm advises parental discretion for children under 10 on both.

Hours / Season of Operation

The farm is open seven days a week, with hours that change by season, so call ahead to confirm. Summer hours are 10 AM to 6 PM daily.

For the 2026 fall season, September 19 to October 31: on weekdays the farm store is open 10 AM to 6 PM, the fall festival activities 1 PM to 6 PM and hayrides 1 PM to 5:30 PM. On weekends and Columbus Day the farm store and activities are open 10 AM to 6 PM, with hayrides from 10 AM to 5:30 PM. The Spooky Trail daytime hayride runs noon to 5:30 PM on weekdays and 10 AM to 5:30 PM on weekends. The Haunted Forest Hayride runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, every 15 minutes from 6:30 PM, last ride 8:45 PM.

Directions

From Route 46 in Fairfield, take the Hollywood Avenue exit and bear left onto Hollywood Avenue. Go about 3/4 mile and, at the open soccer field, bear right onto Big Piece Road. The farm and greenhouses are one mile ahead on the right, and the big gold sign leads you into the driveway.
