About Warren Grove Recreation Area

Warren Grove Recreation Area is a 617 acre stretch of undeveloped Pine Barrens just west of the village of Warren Grove, on the Ocean and Burlington county line. It has no marked trails, no restrooms, no drinking water and no developed facilities. You get around on sand roads and old woods roads, so bring a map and compass or a GPS and expect to find your own way.

Hiking, biking, horseback riding and bird watching are the main draws, and the area is open to hunting in season. Part of the Little Pine Plains lies here, a dwarf pine forest where the pitch pines average only four to five feet tall. The area is also home to broom crowberry, a federally endangered plant.

Bass River State Forest administers the area, and there is no entrance fee.

A Brief History

The state acquired the land from the National Park Service in 1972 under the federal Lands to Parks program. The 1686 Keith survey line runs through it, which is why the tract straddles two counties.

Trail & Path Info

There are no marked trails. The state map shows sand roads, including Beaver Dam Road and Stevenson Road, and one unmarked trail, set among forest, open field, wetland and the Little Pine Plains. Sand makes for slow walking and slower biking, and old woods roads can be hard to tell apart, so carry a map and compass or a GPS.

Tips and Tricks

Bring a map and compass or a GPS, plus water and bug spray, since nothing is supplied here. Download the state map before you head out.

Admission & Guidelines

There is no entrance fee. Pets are allowed on a leash of 6 feet or less. Hunting is allowed in New Jersey state parks only in designated areas, so check with Bass River State Forest which parts are open before you go in during hunting season.

Facilities

None. There are no restrooms, drinking water or other facilities. The nearest hospital is Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin, about 8 miles away. Dial 911 in an emergency.

Directions

Access is by Beaver Dam Road, west of the village of Warren Grove. Stevenson Road also runs through the area. The tract has no street address, so use the map pin and the state map linked on this page rather than the Stage Road or Main Street addresses some sites list.
