About Stokes State Forest Campgrounds

Stokes State Forest has five separate camping areas in the Kittatinny Mountains, and which one you pick decides the trip. This record covers the campgrounds. The forest itself, with its Appalachian Trail miles, Tillman Ravine and Sunrise Mountain, is on the Stokes State Forest page.

Lake Ocquittunk is the family base: 26 family tent and trailer sites plus furnished cabins, and many of the sites are right on the lake or beside the babbling Flatbrook. Most cabins sleep four, and two sleep eight. A separate group cabin sleeps 12.

Shotwell has 29 family sites, some of them pet friendly, and 9 enclosed lean-tos in the woods. Haskins is the group area, with 9 group sites that take from 10 up to 65 people. Lake Ashroe has a group campsite and two sets of group lean-tos.

Steam Mill is the quiet, primitive one: 27 campsites with pit toilets as the only amenity.

Tips and Tricks

Black bears live here. Keep coolers, food and anything with a scent in the closed trunk of your car, and take garbage to the trash receptacles promptly.

Alcohol and smoking are not allowed anywhere in the park. Swimming is not permitted in any of the forest's lakes. Visitors are welcome at campsites from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.

Firewood is not provided at the campsites, cabins or lean-tos, but you can buy it at the forest office during business hours. Fires are allowed only in fire rings, stoves and fireplaces, and can be banned when forest fire danger is high.

Pets are allowed only at the pet friendly campsites in the Shotwell area. Tents are not permitted at the cabin or lean-to sites. Bring your own horseshoes and stake for the Haskins pits.

Admission & Guidelines

Every stay is booked through the state's online camping reservation system, up to 11 months ahead. Tent sites and lean-tos need a 2 night minimum, and the longest stay at any site is 14 consecutive nights. Group sites can be booked for a single night. Cabins and lean-tos must be reserved in advance.

From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, cabins rent by the week only, with set check-in days: Friday for cabins 1 to 3, Saturday for cabins 4 to 6, Sunday for cabins 7 to 9 and Monday for cabins 10 to 12. Outside those dates the cabin minimum is 2 nights.

The person who books must be at least 18 and must stay at the site. Check in at the forest office is mandatory. Cabin and lean-to keys are kept at the office, and if you arrive after it closes, yours will be on a board behind the office with your name on it.
