About Simonson Farms

Simonson Farms is a family Christmas tree farm in Cranbury with cut-your-own fields at two sites: the main one at 120 Cranbury Neck Road and a second field at 260 Dey Road. Between them the farm has more than 35 acres and hundreds of trees to walk through. Pick the one you like and cut it yourself.

You do not need to bring a saw. The farm has saws in the field for a refundable deposit, and you are welcome to bring your own hand saw or chain saw. Twine and netting for tying the tree to the car are available at both sites. The farm's own trees include Canaan, Douglas and Concolor firs, blue and Norway spruce and white pine, and its pricing page also lists Nordman fir and Serbian spruce at the Cranbury Neck Road lot.

The Cranbury Neck Road site also sells fresh-cut trees, in a wide range of sizes, for anyone who would rather skip the field. The Dey Road field is mostly spruces and is for four-wheel drive vehicles only.

It is a working farm, so the ground can be muddy. Wear waterproof boots, and bring a tape measure, because trees always look smaller in the field than they do in your living room.

A Brief History

The Simonson family bought the Dey Road home farm in 1920 and grew potatoes for decades, at one point on 300 acres. The first 5 acres of Christmas trees went in the ground in 1952, and the plantings grew over the years to 125 acres. The last potato crop was in 1987.

Two of the farm's tracts, the Anderson Farm in 1998 and the Scott Farm in 2004, had their development rights sold to the New Jersey Farmland Preservation program, so the land stays farmland. Today the farm covers about 200 acres and is run by Rodger and Samantha Jany. In 2024 the original home farm was sold and the land was divided between family branches; both the Dey Road and Cranbury Neck Road farms still have Christmas trees operated by Simonson Farms.

Tips and Tricks

Wear waterproof boots, since the fields can be muddy. Bring a tape measure and measure your ceiling and the spot for the tree before you go; the farm's own advice is that trees look smaller in the field than they really are.

Saws are provided, but you can use your own. Dogs are welcome as long as they are on a leash.

The largest trees in the cut-your-own fields run about 9 to 10 feet, with a few taller ones, mostly at the Dey Road field.

Admission & Guidelines

You pay for the tree you cut, and the price goes by height. The farm posts its price list for each season on its website, so check it before you go.

At the farm's last posted pricing, the Cranbury Neck Road site took cash, check, Zelle or Venmo and no credit cards, so bring one of those.

Directions

From Exit 8A of the NJ Turnpike, bear right out of the tolls toward Route 535. At the traffic light turn left onto Route 535 South, follow it to the third traffic light and turn right onto Route 614 (Dey Road) West. The Dey Road cut-your-own field is 1.9 miles along. From Route 1, take Scudders Mill Road to the fifth traffic light and turn left onto Dey Road; the farm's retail lot is about 3 miles along on the right and the Dey Road cut-your-own lot is another mile past it.

For the Cranbury Neck Road site, the farm says GPS units may need the intersection of George Davison Road and Cranbury Neck Road, and that its street address should not be trusted in a GPS unit.
