Featured Places: Tillman Ravine and Buttermilk Falls

Any time we are in Stokes, we always stop by Tillman Ravine and Buttermilk falls. No matter how many times we stop by, it is always like wwe are seeing these amazing places for the first time.

Tillman Ravine

A natural area within Stokes State Forest, Tillman Ravine retains the primeval beauty of its pine and hemlock forests. A mountain stream, Tillman Brook, flows through the area and rises in a spring along side of the Kittatinny Mountains. When visiting the ravine, you will find large parking lots (along Tillman Rd), no-flush bathrooms, hiking trails, a great stream dropping over waterfalls and down flumes/chutes. The trail and the river eventually lead you all the way down to Buttermilk Falls.

Buttermilk Falls

Buttermilk Falls (in the Delaware Water Gap) is a picturesque waterfall right by the road. It cascades spectacularly 90 feet down the red shale face off the Kittatinny Ridge. It is the only waterfall in New Jersey, apart from Great Falls, with a developed viewing area: the National Park Service has erected an interpretive display and built a wooden walkway to the top.
